I arrive at Blake Enterprises, the largest private equity firm in Boston and the 7th largest company in the country. I’m a few minutes early so I pop into a bathroom to check myself out in the mirror.

Fuck. My thong keeps sticking out of the back of my skirt. Oh well, I’m pretty sure nobody’s going to care if the new temp looks a little trampy. In fact, I could probably stuff envelopes completely naked without anybody even noticing.

“Rebecca Kern?” A tall, slim woman in a sleek business suit greets me in the waiting area.

“Yes, that’s me,” I say, adjusting the back of my skirt to hide my thong.

“Welcome to Blake Enterprises. I’m Candace, from human resources.” Her shake is firm as she scans my attire.

“We have a lot of menial office work that needs to get done. Mostly envelop stuffing. Sound good?”

Not really. But what do I expect right out of college? And with forty-two thousand dollars in school loans to pay back, I can’t say that I have much of a choice.

“Sounds great,” I say, forcing a smile.

“Great. Let me show you to your post.”

I’m whisked down a couple of hallways and into an elevator. The human resources lady presses her thumb into the elevator’s security panel and selects the 111th floor.

“You’ll be reporting to the top floor for the next six weeks. You’ll be right down the hall from Mr. Blake,” she says, eyeing my attire for the second time.

“And please, stick to your job,” she says, pausing as the elevator lands on the top floor. “Mr. Blake is a very busy man.”

My curiosity’s been piqued.
